Active Row London - SEND
Active Row SEND was launched in September 2024 with twelve schools across London, providing a dedicated focus on inclusion for young people with special educational needs and disabilities. The programme evolved from the wider Active Row initiative but was designed to ensure a more tailored and supportive approach. At its heart is a dedicated SEND coach, whose role is to adapt activities, build confidence, and create an environment where every participant can thrive.
Partnerships are essential in making Active Row SEND possible. Sessions are delivered at the Royal Docks Adventure (RDA) and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (QEOP), two venues that provide both accessibility and inspiration. These facilities allow students to take part in indoor and on-water rowing in a safe, welcoming space, while also connecting with the excitement of London’s Olympic legacy.
While the programme is still in its early stages, its impact is already being felt. For many participants, the simple act of being part of a regular, structured activity has made a huge difference. The chance to row — whether indoors or on the water — gives students something to look forward to, a sense of purpose, and opportunities to develop new friendships. Parents and teachers alike have commented on the positive changes they have seen, from improved confidence to greater enthusiasm for physical activity.
One of the programme leads described the value of this work: "Active Row SEND gives participants something to look forward to, a sense of purpose and belonging. In her farewell email, one teacher mentioned a boy who is pretty much non-verbal, yet spent the day at the RDA eager to repeat one of the few words he knows: 'boat.' It was incredibly moving to see the joy and motivation he found through rowing."
For many young people, particularly those with SEND, traditional sports can be difficult to access. Active Row SEND is helping to change that, showing students and their families that rowing can be a sport for everyone. By offering a calm, structured, and encouraging environment, the programme is opening doors that might otherwise remain closed.
