Oarsome Challenge 2025

Last week, we wrapped up one of our biggest events of the year — Oarsome Challenge — and what a big three days it’s been! From Greenwich through central London to Chiswick, the Thames was full of energy, fancy dress, and some very determined rowing.

For anyone unfamiliar, Oarsome Challenge is LYR’s signature team challenge — a unique opportunity for companies to swap the boardroom for the boat and take on 16 miles of rowing through the heart of London. It’s part fundraiser, part team-builder, and all-round good time.

Over three packed days, we welcomed 34 crews from across sectors including law, banking, insurance, livery companies and beyond. A big shoutout goes to Art Invest Real Estate, who once again brought energy, enthusiasm, and vital fundraising support — along with a fleet of their colleagues, clients, and partners.

The event wouldn’t be what it is without our amazing coaches, volunteers and staff — or the rowing community who get behind it every year. Among those lending support is three-time Olympic Champion Andy Triggs-Hodge, who knows a thing or two about pushing yourself on the water. As Andy put it:

“Oarsome Challenge is a great day out, bringing colleagues and friends together to support a great cause, learn a little about themselves – and each other – and see London from a unique perspective. It’s fantastic to see the sport connecting with people who wouldn’t normally row, watching them complete a great challenge with a smile on their face, and seeing their pride about what they’ve just achieved.”

New for 2025, we were thrilled to team up with Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity for a special final day: The Great GOSH Row. Partnering with another children’s charity felt like a natural fit, and we’re proud to work alongside them to amplify the impact of this event.

“We are very proud of what we’ve achieved over the past years with Oarsome Challenge,” said LYR CEO Matt Rostron, “but that has been topped through our new partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital. Charities will achieve more when they work together, and for LYR, the chance to support the Great GOSH Row is a very exciting development.”

The course itself is something special — starting in the Isle of Dogs, winding past Canary Wharf, gliding under Tower Bridge and Westminster, and finally racing The Boat Race course from Putney to Chiswick. It’s just the right mix of challenge and celebration, and thanks to the support of our coxes and safety crew, everyone makes it to the finish line — just in time for BBQ and beers by the water.

And the best part? Every stroke rowed helps more young people across the UK access the same sport, space, and confidence that our Oarsome Challenge crews experienced.

Bring on the next one.
