LYR is developing a network of open clubs, where we offer rowing and other water sports to young people from underrepresented groups outside the school setting. The emphasis within the Open Clubs is on fun, participation, and inclusion. We want to foster a sense of belonging and community, encouraging positive self-development. The Open Clubs are intended to act as an easily accessible, "youth-club" style destination for young people who have tried rowing in school and want to do more, while also acting as a gateway to further progression in LYR Club.
The Royal Docks Adventure is LYR's main on-water base. Using our fleet of boats, we deliver rowing at all levels for young people taking part across our engagement, life skills and competition programmes. Working with our partners, Sea Cadets, we also offer canoeing and sailing at the site.
Club session days and timesYou can learn to row with London Youth Rowing, at one of our holiday rowing courses.
All courses are aimed at complete beginners, taking participants through land training exercises, equipment handling and on-water rowing both by themselves and in crews.
Course details:
London Youth Rowing coaches are Level 2 Rowing Coaching qualified, and certified first aiders. Our goal is to make sure participants have a fun and safe introduction to rowing.
In 2021, LYR launched a new rowing and water sports club focused on providing an exit route for juniors from our Active Row, learn to row and open club programmes. LYR Club offers a progression from open clubs, with the aim being to create a squad training regularly and focused on building their rowing and water sports skills, while tracking the wider development of their life skills using the skills builder framework. Racing is one of the goals for those taking part, but not the key priority. Instead, the core focus is on inclusion, applying the lessons we have learned from our programmes over the last 15 years to create a water sports club where young people can thrive.
LYR runs rowing, canoeing and SUP programmes for the community around the Olympic Park, opening access to the park's waterways as part of the London 2012 Olympic Legacy

Globe Rowing Club is a vibrant junior squad with about 30 members aged 13-18 years. The squad trains with the aim of competing at various regattas, from local to regional and national events. The clubhouse and gym, are located in Greenwich, while the main location for junior on-water rowing is the Royal Albert Dock near London City Airport. Number of sessions and commitment to training is based on both athlete age, and personal aspiration.
More InformationThe Mossbourne Rowing Academy runs in two state secondary schools in Hackney - Mossbourne Community Academy and Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy. The aim of the programme is to run a rowing programme comparable to, and competing with, those at leading private schools. The programme is fully funded by the Mossbourne Federation, LYR and other donors, meaning that there is no cost to young people taking part. All pupils at the two schools take part in indoor rowing in years 7 and 8, with the option to try on-water rowing, before the Rowing Academy squad focuses on performance rowing from Year 9 onwards. Over 100 pupils from highly diverse backgrounds train multiple times per week as part of the Rowing Academy, led by ex-GB rower Tom Wilkinson and his team of coaches.
