Active Row Bristol
Active Row Bristol launched in 2023, working with eleven schools across the city and quickly building momentum. From its beginnings, the programme has aimed to widen participation and create sustainable opportunities for young people to stay engaged with rowing. In addition to school-based activities, Bristol has developed an Open Club atBristol Ariel Rowing Club (BARC), which extends the pathway for participants to move from indoor sessions into regular on-water rowing. This development has ensured that rowing in Bristol is not just a one-off experience in schools but an ongoing opportunity to be active, social, and part of a supportive community.
The programme is based at Ariel Rowing Club, where students and open club participants have access to the club’s boathouse, fleet, and gym facilities. All Active Row Bristol on-water sessions take place here, giving young people the chance to experience rowing in a safe and welcoming environment. By working closely with the club, LYR is able to provide meaningful experiences on the water while also building stronger links between schools and the city’s established rowing community.
Bristol has already hosted several successful events. Oasis Brightstowe School served as a hub for the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships (NJIRC) Virtual 2025, allowing students from across the region to take part in this flagship competition. Events like these not only provide a competitive focus but also strengthen the sense of achievement among students, many of whom are trying rowing for the first time.
Nectaria was introduced to rowing this year when her school visited Ariel Rowing Club for an indoor session. She immediately loved the experience and couldn’t wait to try rowing on the water. Since then, she has become one of the most consistent attendees at the Monday evening Open Club. Nectaria describes how excited she feels before each session and how rowing has boosted her confidence. Recently, she challenged herself by taking her first strokes in a single scull — a moment that showed just how much her confidence has grown. She is now exploring opportunities with City of Bristol Rowing Club while still attending the weekly LYR sessions that she enjoys so much.
One of the clearest benefits of the programme has been the consistency and positivity it offers. Having a regular weekly session, particularly during the summer holidays, provides structure and a positive outlet for energy. Students also mix with peers from different schools, building new friendships and learning to collaborate in ways that may not have been possible without Active Row Bristol.
