The Oarsome Challenge

Oarsome 2.0 - the team adventure you won't forget!

Take on the challenge of the year: row our stable, intuitive Skerries, along some of the most picturesque, iconic, and exclusive stretches of the river Thames.

This is a serous challenge which some training will be required for. The course is broken down in to race and procession sections. Starting in Maidenhead, with a night at Staines, and the finish line in Richmond with a full on BBQ and Beers to celebrate your journey!

The Challenge Starts on Friday 19th May and finishes on Saturday 20th May 2023.

Experience the power of team work in a boat

You'll need:

  • A team of 10, 8 on the oars, 1 cox and 1 reserve rower to rotate and give people a break. All will row.
  • Training sessions are advised for all the team, but you don't need to be Olympic athletes. You should aim to be active a couple of times a way to prepare, see our advice below.
  • To secure your place we need a boat fee of £1600 (deposit of £500 by 13th Mar, and remaining payment by 17th April), plus a commitment from each rower to raise £500 for LYR.

Other details:

  • We use boats called Skerries, they fixed seat, strong and stable, great for people who've never rowed before
  • The course is: Maidenhead RC to Staines: 24km and 4 locks. Staines to Richmond; 31km and 5 locks. Day 1 should take just under 7 hours including breaks at locks, day 2 should take 8 hrs including breaks.
  • LYR will be in full support, making sure you're safe, looked after and enjoying yourself!

Training advice. The key is to make training just part of your lifestyle, so it doesn't take up extra time, but keeps you healthy. This can be jogging to work, cycling for your commute, or more walking instead of public transport. Or going for romantic walks instead of trips to the cinema, or sitting and talking in a bar.

For this challenge the best case scenario is to try to use the rowing machine a few times a week, at a local gym for instance. Our advice is to keep the rate to no more than 20, put on your headphones with a good playlist or podcast and try to row for a few blocks of 10 or 20minutes, with a rest, stretch and repeat until you've earned a good hunger!
