Active Row Newham
Active Row Newham launched in September 2024 with twelve schools taking part across the borough. The programme builds on the success of the wider Active Row initiative, which has been running in London for several years, but Newham now benefits from its own dedicated focus. A key part of the offer is the Open Club, giving young people the chance to continue rowing outside of school hours and develop their skills in a fun, social, and inclusive setting.
Partnerships in Newham are central to the programme’s success. Sessions take place at venues including the Royal Docks Adventure (RDA) and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (QEOP), both of which provide inspiring environments for students to get on the water. These locations also connect participants to the legacy of London 2012, reinforcing the sense that they are part of something bigger than just a school sports session.
A variety of events have taken place in Newham since the programme began. At the RDA, students took part in the Apax Life Skills Day, where ten young people combined rowing activities with valuable personal development workshops. Newham schools also hosted a hub for the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships (NJIRC) at St. Angela’s, allowing local participants to compete as part of this major national event. In addition, Newham played host to the Active Row On-Water Festival at QEOP, which welcomed schools from across London to celebrate their progress and enjoy a day of competitive but supportive racing. These events not only showcase talent but also give students the chance to build confidence and feel proud of their achievements.
For many staff involved, the highlight of the programme has been the chance to work closely with the Open Club. As one coach reflected:
"The best part of my job is working with the Open Club and coaching those who have come along the Active Row pathway. Supporting those who started in schools on ergs to come down independently once a week to row with their friends is rewarding. I get to help them stay active in a fun and social environment."
By providing both school-based sessions and an open community hub, Active Row Newham ensures that rowing is not just a one-off experience, but a sport that young people can build into their lives long term.
