Active Row Bristol – London Youth Rowing
Background
Marcus Mumta first encountered rowing in Year 8 after being encouraged by his principal to attend a trial session. With no prior experience, he approached the opportunity with an open mind - and quickly stood out, achieving the top score in initial testing.
From that starting point, Marcus has developed into one of the most committed and self-driven students within the programme. He now attends regular sessions both after school and through additional opportunities, including travel to external training via minibus provision. What distinguishes Marcus is not just his performance, but his attitude. Described as humble and quietly determined, he approaches rowing with discipline, consistently pushing himself to improve.
Impact
Rowing has become a central part of Marcus’s routine, providing both physical challenge and personal growth. He describes the sport as demanding but rewarding, offering a sense of pride at the end of each session.
“At the end you have a sense of relief and pride.”
Through rowing, Marcus has grown in confidence, becoming more engaged both socially and within the school environment. Once quieter in school settings, he now interacts more freely with peers and staff, demonstrating increased self-assurance. His impact extends beyond himself. Marcus regularly supports younger students, helping them develop technique and confidence, and has become a positive role model within sessions.
“It has helped me believe in myself more.”
His discipline is evident in performance, having won the Year 9 boys’ race at theBristol NJIRC virtual hub, alongside consistent improvement through additional training opportunities.
Legacy
Marcus is now looking ahead to both indoor and on-water progression. He is motivated to improve his NJIRC performance and is keen to develop technical skill on the water, with aspirations to compete beyond school.
“I want to get faster and try new strategies.”
His journey reflects the potential of the programme to identify and nurture talent while also developing character, leadership, and resilience. With continued access to training and competition, Marcus represents the type of student who can carry rowing forward within the school - not only as a participant, but as a leader.
