Are you ready for a unique adventure on the River Thames that combines team building, exhilarating rowing, and a chance to make a difference in the lives of young people? Look no further! The Oarsome Challenge is an unforgettable event that is open to anyone, including those who have never set foot in a rowing boat before - friends, family, and work colleagues alike. Join us as we embark on an epic rowing journey down the River Thames, all in support of LYR, our incredible charity. Get ready to don your fancy dress, experience the thrill of rowing, and raise funds for a cause that truly matters.

What is the Oarsome Challenge?

The Oarsome Challenge is a team challenge that invites participants of all backgrounds to embark on a rowing adventure down the River Thames, providing the opportunity for people to connect with London in a special way. On the 10th and 11th of July, starting at the iconic Tower Bridge, teams will row to Putney Bridge and then race along the famous Boat Race course, culminating at Chiswick Bridge. Crews taking part will go afloat from Greenwich, gathering mid-afternoon to be ready to paddle through Tower Bridge at 6pm, with an estimated completion time of approximately two hours to cover the entire course.

Team Building and Fun on the Water:

The Oarsome Challenge offers an ideal opportunity for team building, bringing together friends, family, and work colleagues in an exciting and dynamic environment. As you row together in sync, navigating the Thames, you'll discover the power of collaboration, learn about each other, and see the sights of London from the river as you row. With the increase of people working from home, what better way to build bonds than working as a united team, overcoming challenges, and fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie?

But it's not just about serious rowing; we encourage you to embrace the fun-filled atmosphere of the Oarsome Challenge. Fancy dress is highly encouraged, allowing you to unleash your creativity and add an extra layer of excitement to the event. Imagine your team rowing in imaginative costumes, bringing joy and laughter to everyone along the riverbanks. It's a chance to let loose, showcase your unique style, and create memories that will last a lifetime, whilst supporting a worthwhile charity.

In addition to the exhilarating rowing experience, all participating crews are offered a training session coached by LYR staff. These coaching sessions, held at Richmond Bridge or at LYR's base on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park provide an opportunity to bed in basic rowing skills before the big day and learn more about LYR's work to support young people to fulfil their potential. It's a great chance to connect with LYR's passionate team, gain insights into their programs, and understand the profound impact rowing can have on the lives of young people.

The Skerries:

The Oarsome Challenge showcases an intriguing aspect of rowing history - the Skerries. Only 18 of these iconic Skerries were ever built, designed by Mark Edwards, who also built the Gloriana, the Queen's Royal row barge. Today, there are 15 Skerries remaining, owned by various companies and boat clubs across London. During the Oarsome Challenge, all 15 Skerries are brought together for this extraordinary event, creating a breathtaking sight as they navigate down the Thames. The Skerries are fixed seat boats, meaning anyone can jump in and get rowing without any previous experience, and are also designed to be stable and safe even if the River decides to show its choppy face on race day.

Make a Difference and Learn from LYR:

By participating in the Oarsome Challenge, you directly support LYR and our mission to reduce inequality among young people in London and across the UK. LYR empowers young individuals, particularly from ethnic minority groups, by developing essential life skills such as problem-solving, leadership, aiming high, teamwork, and staying positive through the sport of rowing.

By taking part in the Oarsome Challenge, you will become a champion for positive change. Your fundraising efforts will provide young people with access to rowing programs, mentorship, and opportunities they may never have had otherwise. You'll be empowering them to overcome barriers, unlock their potential, and build a brighter future. It's an incredible opportunity to make a lasting impact in the lives of young individuals and contribute to a more inclusive society.
