Sam started rowing on indoor rowing machines at school in Bexley, after which he represented his school at London Youth Games. He attributes the competitiveness and enjoyment he got from these events, as the reason he really got into sport.

His first on-water rowing experience was with London Youth Rowing, aged 15yrs.

I decided to take rowing seriously when I joined Mossbourne Academy and began to row full-time. The support from Mossbourne and LYR throughout my time there was phenomenal...I learnt a lot about time management and organisation [from rowing]. Rowing has also taught me about hard work, perseverance and dedication.

Sam went on to win a bronze medal at the British Junior Rowing Championships and in turn was offered a scholarship to study and row at the University of Washington, USA. He studied abroad for one year, and then returned to complete his studies at Oxford Brookes University. He is now an U23 World Rowing, silver medalist.

I have endless amounts of memories from LYR and I will never forget the opportunities that I had whilst at LYR, including travelling worldwide to race. The friends I made during my years at LYR will be my friends for life.

Sam kept involved with LYR even after graduating from our junior squad by helping out at some of the brilliant ‘Invesco’ events across the country.

I would like to say a huge thank you to former LYR Mossbourne coach Matt Paul, who was an amazing coach to me and has truly set me up for life.
