London Youth Rowing have released the date for the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships (NJIRC) 2021, five months earlier than normal, in hopes of giving the rowing community something positive to look forward to during a challenging time.

NJIRC is set to return to the Copper Box Arena on 26th February 2021.

Like the rest of the world, London Youth Rowing is in lockdown due to the Coronavirus. While coaching and school programmes have been postponed until further notice, staff are still working hard behind the scenes to make sure participants have training resources, virtual support and are staying motivated.

Matt Rostron, LYR CEO said:

While we’re in lockdown, we felt it was important to have a goal and something inspiring to focus on, to boost morale for our staff, participants and the rowing community. NJIRC is certainly an inspiring event and one we are so honoured to have founded and are incredibly proud to host. We hope NJIRC 2021 can be scribbled on calendars all over the country as something to work towards - on rowing machines, doing circuits in the garden, running with the dog - knowing there is excitement to come at the end of this difficult period.

The 2020 championships, held at the end of February, was one of the last mass events that took place in the U.K. rowing calendar. This was in part due to the terrible weather at the start of the season, and then the cancellation of following events because of the Coronavirus outbreak. The event saw 2000 competitors take to its sporting stage, and was supported by 250 volunteers.

NJIRC’s corporate counterpart, Race the Thames fundraising event was also a huge success. 18 teams raised thousands of pounds for NJIRC and London Youth Rowing programmes. The event includes racing over 72,000m - the length of the tidal Thames in teams of 8, overlooking the junior arena. Competitors have a chance to see first hand what their fundraising efforts support and the effect it has on young people’s lives.
