You arrive at the event venue and join the LYR team of coach(es), teacher(s) and/or youth worker(s). The event could be during school hours, after school or at the weekend, and could involve young people from just one youth club or school, or young people from across the whole country for larger competitions. An LYR coach will be there to meet you and talk through the day’s activities.
As part of the team, you help set up for the event. This means putting together and arranging equipment (e.g. rowing machines) in competition layout. A large screen, projector and sound system are constructed at the front of the venue, and linked to a laptop with special racing software.
The team works with event organisers to ensure the smooth running of the event. You may be front of house ‘meeting and greeting’, working with the athletes or ‘behind the scenes’ with the software set up and collation of results.
Results and data are submitted to the LYR coaches and entered on the LYR database. At the end of the event, you may help distribute prizes or certificates.
The equipment is loaded back into a van and the team head back to one of the LYR centres to unload.
Phew!
