Summer Holidays:

We organise a series of week-long summer rowing courses for beginners between the ages of 11 and 18.  These are  held at the following LYR affiliated rowing clubs:  London Regatta Centre, Newham; Lea Rowing Club, Hackney and Barn Elms Boathouse, Wandsworth.

Cost:  £15 per course

Level:  All – from beginner to experienced.

What happens on the course?

  • On arrival, there is a briefing session about what to expect during the week, a quick tour of the premises and then the course rules and water safety are discussed. We run a short assessment of your physical training needs and put you in a relevant group. Last but not least, on the first day everyone has a go at designing a logo for their team, as your crew will choose the best which will be printed on t-shirts to wear on Friday.
  • We get stuck into technique building sessions using  indoor rowing machines and, if you are at Barn Elms Boathouse or the London Regatta Centre, using the indoor rowing tank too, before getting out on the water in our fleet of stable sculling boats.
  • Most of the time you spend on the water being coached by our highly experienced team.  You’ll experience all sorts of fun exercises and even video analysis to give you detailed feedback and help you make progress quickly
  • Throughout the week, there is lots of fun and games – both on and off the water!
  • The highlight of the course is on the last day of the week , race day which involves a mini regatta style competition against course participants from other LYR centres  at the London Regatta Centre, Newham. Friends and family are welcome to come and cheer you on.
  • Everyone is invited to return to the centre of their choice in the September term and continue rowing as regular members.
  • One of the most important things to remember about the week is you must turn up every day. Very rarely will we allow young people who have booked on the course to return after missing one day. There is so much to learn that you really must attend every day. The sessions run from 11-3 every day.

In summer 2009, the summer programme was made possible by the generous support of: SPORT ENGLAND; the YES TRUST; the METROPOLITAN POLICE PRISONER PROPERTY ACT FUND and HAMMERSMITH & FULHAM COUNCIL

Easter Courses:

At London Youth Rowing we make best use of every day we have – and your Easter holidays are no exception.

img_9436For the very best juniors there are training camps in countries like Spain, France, Belgium and Italy. However, if you’re a developing athlete or an absolute beginner, there are sculling camps and ‘learn to row’ courses back in London at your nearest LYR centre. We have been running the Easter sculling camps for a number of years now to develop and nurture those juniors who are already rowing, showing promise and who want to make a jump up in one week. Last year we started the ‘Fast Forward’ course where we identify those with the greatest promise from various schools and youth clubs.  There are other similar programmes at other times of the year but Easter is the best time as it’s just about getting warm and you have a summer of racing ahead of you.

Half-term:

Half term courses are held at the following LYR affiliated rowing clubs:  London Regatta Centre, Newham; Lea Rowing Club, Hackney and Barn Elms Boathouse, Wandsworth.

The half term courses are non-residential sculling courses aimed at rowers with some experience who want to develop their technique.
