Elite Rowing Programme for Sixth Form Candidates
Programme Objective: To produce elite rowers able to compete at the top level while providing a superior sixth form education
Programme Opens: September 2010
Programme Open to: Year 11 students (academic year 2009/10)
London Youth Rowing, Mossbourne and the Lea Rowing Club are launching a groundbreaking new Rowing Academy, offering places in the sixth form to students with the physiological and academic qualifications to succeed. No experience in rowing is required – you will receive the very best coaching, training and encouragement during the two years in the sixth form. We invite candidates to apply for the Rowing Academy and to realise your academic and athletic potential through this exciting programme.
Starting September 2010, Mossbourne will welcome the first recruits to its elite rowing programme. This opportunity will only be available to current Year 11 students. Its objective is to identify and develop those individuals with the potential to become champions.
No champion can reach the top without help. The successful candidates will enjoy the very best coaching, facilities, academic support and pastoral care. However, with this support comes an expectation of commitment to the programme and its high standards.
No experience in rowing is necessary. Candidates will ideally be tall with a passion for sport and a strong desire for success. Offers will be subject to academic qualification and rigorous physiological testing.
If you feel you have what it takes or you know someone who could make the best of this opportunity please read on.

1st Round of Physical Testing
National Junior Indoor rowing Championships, Battersea Evolution, Battersea Park 11am – 2pm
Ideally Year 11 candidates will be tall (Boys: 185cm; Girls: 175cm). Shorter candidates will be considered if they have already rowed to a high standard. We will measure your height, weight and arm span and subject you to a series of tests to assess your cardio-vascular fitness and overall body strength. The testing will require maximal effort and candidates will be placed under considerable physical stress. If on testing day a candidate feels unwell, or has recently been suffering from an illness, virus or injury, we recommend that you withdraw from testing. LYR takes no responsibility for illness or injury caused as a consequence of the testing. Testing will begin at 11am and end at 2pm. If an athlete is racing on the day then sufficient time will be given to recover for testing. Athletes are advised to arrive in plenty of time to warm up and ensure that they wear appropriate clothing. Testing will cost £5 which includes the race fee for Year 11 at NJIRC.

2nd Round of Physical Testing and Academic Interviews
Mossbourne Community Academy
If candidates meet the required minimum standard they will be notified by Monday 22nd March if they are to be invited to a second round of testing and academic interviews. Both of these will be conducted at Mossbourne on Saturday 27th March and conditional offers will be made by March 31st.
12th – 14th March 2010
Easter Training Camp
Successful candidates will be required to attend a three day training camp at Lea Rowing Club in the second week of the Easter holidays. For some sessions the group will be divided into two groups – those who have rowing experience and those that do not. There will be some gym and water work but essentially it is an opportunity for you to meet your fellow squad members and your coach. Your coach will spell out what you can expect and what will be expected of you.

Summer Term and Summer Holidays
‘Try before you buy’
In any sport, to achieve at the highest level takes a great deal of dedication. This is probably truer for rowing than most sports. Experience tells us that despite the best intentions, athletes can sometimes realise that this level of commitment is not for them. For this reason, over the summer term and summer holidays you will be expected to train at least once a week at Lea Rowing Club. This allows your coach to make sure they are satisfied that you have what it takes and just as importantly – you are realistic about what you are able to commit to. We will get to know you and you will get to know rowing (if you don’t already). We will take you to important races and events and by the time your GCSE results come through, all stakeholders will be able to make an informed decision.
27th August 2010
Final offers will be made based on your academic results and the level of commitment you have shown over the summer.
