Getting started

You start rowing with LYR at one of our affiliated clubs: Royal Docks RC, London Regatta Centre, Newham; Lea RC, Hackney; Globe RC, Greenwich OR Barn Elms Boathouse, Wandsworth.  You can come to one of our holiday courses, or just pop in and have a chat with one of our coaches.

As you progress, you become a member of that club, and if you want to compete, do so under the banner of your club.  You can also row in a composite crew with rowers of your level from another LYR club.  This way, your crew has an even better chance of beating the more established rowing clubs and schools!  This year, LYR crews notched up their first medals at regional regattas and won 3 silvers at the National Championships.

The London Regatta Centre (LRC) and the Barn Elms Boathouse have their own indoor rowing tanks, so if you start at one of these centres, you can finetune your technique before getting out onto the water.   If you have a disability, you are not excluded – LRC also has specially adapted equipment which allows young people with disabilities to use the rowing tank, as well as indoor and on-water equipment [see LYR Adaptive].

You can come down under your own steam, or as part of a school or club group.  Those taking part in on-water programmes at LYR affiliated centres include:
