Coach Training & Education

How can I become a Certified Instructor?

The secret to a successful programme is the quality of the person delivering it. You have already displayed the enthusiasm and passion for the work you do, just by getting in touch with us. To get the most out of the LYR Indoor Rowing Programme, the next step is to become a certified instructor. You may be reading this and thinking "great, but what do I know about rowing?". It might be the case that you can see the obvious benefits of the LYR Programme but are not sure what it takes to deliver the programme to your school, club or youth group. The good news is LYR is able to provide you with all the coaching and qualifications you will need to make a success of the scheme. In just a few days, you can earn a Dry Instructors certification and be ready to begin working with your group. You do not need to know how to row, you just need the interest and passion to lead your school, club or youth group and make the indoor rowing programme a success.

LYR organizes a range of courses and awards to help you and your young people deliver a safe, sustainable and exciting programme. Your LYR Representative can tell you about the different courses and qualifications including, the Dry Instructors Course, the UKCC Level 2, the Community Sports Leader Award (CSLA) and the Junior Rowing Leaders Award (JRLA). All are recognised ARA qualifications.

The Dry Instructor's (DI) Award

The DI focuses on producing a competent coach who can promote the benefits and pleasure of rowing through quality coaching and appropriate skill acquisition on the indoor rowing machine. More formally, a DI coach is qualified to organise a group safely on the land and deliver sessions using the indoor rowing machine. The course is particularly suitable for newcomers to rowing or to coaching such as teachers and gym instructors. However, experienced rowing coaches looking to gain more information about suitable skills and drills for indoor sessions and basic maintenance of indoor rowing machines will also benefit. The course is also recommended for Community Sports Leader Award (CSLA) graduates who along with Junior Rowing Leaders Award (JRLA) graduates will find that they have already covered many of the modules. The course could also be used as a module for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and in conjunction with the MV scheme.

Course content:

  • Introduction to course
  • What is LYR?
  • Safety and the indoor rowing machine
  • L.Y.R. indoor rowing technique.
  • Fault finding
  • Organising a session
  • Competition
  • Assessment
  • Debrief and Action planning

The course lasts between 4-8 hours depending on the trainees. It costs £60 per person for the resources. All candidates will need to bring with them a spare change of clothing suitable for exercise. The course could be run at your school/club or youth group.

In addition every candidate will need to become a member of ARA (the National Governing Body for rowing) to validate their award. This costs between £10 for an indoor membership to £21 for a non racing membership which entitles the member to a glossy magazine as well as all the other benefits of ARA membership.

UKCC Level 2 Award

The UKCC Level 2 Award is the entry level qualification for on the water rowing instructors. It replaces the older ARA Instructors Award (IA). The materials, course delivery and assessment have been substantially reviewed. The award is now targeted at beginner coaches and not just coaches of beginners,. The Level 2 Certificate qualifies coaches to prepare for, deliver and review coaching sessions on the water.

Other Courses

Community Sports Leader Award (CSLA) and the Junior Rowing Leaders Award (JRLA) are aimed at training the older more enthusiastic young people in your school or youth club. We can sometimes enable these young people to gain qualifications for free too.

Accreditation for Prior Learning and Direct Assessment is available for participants with qualifications in coaching from other Sports National Governing Bodies or other national Rowing Federations.

At LYR we are always looking at ways to help and this is no exception.
