Adaptive Rowing

Shaun and Martyna

Adaptive Rowing challenges barriers to participation in this sport for individuals with physical, sensory and learning impairments by providing opportunities supported by a range of technical and coaching resources offering full and meaningful participation in the sport, enabling individuals to make the most of their abilities.

The programme aims to be inclusive, by involving disabled and non-disabled individuals across all levels of the performance spectrum, and targeted, by identifying and providing rowing opportunities for disabled people in London .

Rowing for people with disabilities has for many years now been restricted by lack of facilities. However with changes in legislation and societal expectation along with the development of accessible rowing venues such as the London Regatta Centre, the need now is not just to provide basic opportunities, but also to ensure that a framework exists for the development of meaningful opportunities across the performance spectrum. This supported with performance development pathways that enable coaches to develop athletes for future Paralympic competition.

The move by the international governing body of our sport (FISA) and the National Rowing Federations to provide for inclusive participation in rowing is very encouraging. Since 2002, Adaptive Rowing events have been held at the World Rowing Championships. The emphasis on inclusiveness ensures that disabled and non-disabled people are represented in our sport at the highest competitive level. Adaptive Rowing has been accepted into the programme of the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.

Back-Up Trust

Back-Up is a national charity dedicated to providing opportunities for spinally injured and abled bodied individuals to experience the buzz of outdoor activities together and so increase self belief, independence and motivation through engaging SCI persons in sport. We work in partnership with Back-Up in providing rowing opportunities for persons with spinal cord injury.
