Indoor rowing is reputedly the fastest growing sport in the UK, with over 100,000 people taking part in indoor rowing activities weekly.
We all know what they look like. The indoor rowing machine is now found in most gyms, rowing clubs, schools and training centres around the world. And there’s a reason that rowing machines are so popular. They are a fantastic all body workout, developing aerobic fitness, flexibility AND strength all at once. Indoor rowing is a fantastic calorie burner too!
The sport has an established junior competition framework - from local indoor tournaments and regional competitions to NJIRC, the (National Junior Indoor Rowing Championship) which is a terrific event run annually by LYR in March, at the end of the indoor rowing season.
What is more, measuring progress is easy. LYR programmes use the best machines which have electronic monitors, enabling easy data collection ( and when machines are connected together, even enabling competition between users). By regularly gathering the data from monitors and keeping participation records, we are able to evaluate the success of our programmes for sponsors as well as schools and clubs and local authorities.
Indoor rowing has other benefits for schools and clubs:
- the machines are easily storable – a bonus in a lot of schools and youth clubs short on space;
- new software and games available on the latest Concept2 models, mean the machines can be used for a wide range of cross-curricular lessons including maths, physics and biology;
- the sport is very inclusive – you don’t have to have done any exercise before, you can be fat or thin, sporty or unsporty, and the machines are easily adaptable to accomodate people with disabilities
- indoor rowing is low-impact, with negligible risk of injury
