This was the 5th in a series of International Adaptive Rowing Coaching& Classification Workshops delivered by FISA to promote the development of adaptive rowing internationally and encourage national federations to establish adaptive rowing programmes with a view to increasing participation at the World Rowing Championships and Paralympic Games in Beijing 2008.
This workshop was organised and hosted by Sao Paulo, Brazilian Rowing Confederation and the Brazilian Paralympic Committee. The venue was the Fundação Itaú Club, Sao Paulo overlooking the beautiful Lake Guarapiranga.
The workshop was delivered by FISA Adaptive Rowing Commission members Judy Morrison (USA), FISA Chief Classifier and Simon Goodey (GBR), FISA International Technical Classifier and covered the classification of athletes with medical and technical trainee classifiers in attendance from Brazil, Argentina and Japan. The coaching workshop covered impairment specific modules for athletes with physical, sensory and learning impairments, rigging adaptive boats, physiological testing of athletes.
A considerable amount of interest was shown in the Functional Electrical Stimulation Assisted Rowing programme and the partnership between ASPIRE, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and London Regatta Centre. Simon Goodey presented at the University Sant Anna, where they have an International programme in Bio-feedback.
The organisation was outstanding with considerable attention to detail to make sure that we could deliver an effective workshop, including simultaneous translation. We look forward to seeing Brazil at this year's World Rowing Championships in Munich and their desire to qualify 4 Paralympic boats.
A highlight at the conclusion of the workshop was a visited to the Interlagos Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit, Sao Paulo where we were given a guided tour and allowed to drive around the circuit.
