National Distance Award Scheme

London Youth Rowing are in the process of launching our new indoor rowing programmes for schools and youth clubs.

We feel that the way to engage more young people is to move away from racing and placing more emphasis on the distance rowed. This means that the less-able children are not placed under the usual pressure to enter side by side racing, rather they will be encouraged to row when they can, for as long they can and attempt to achieve certain distances, and rewarded with medals when they do so.

Although it doesn't sound adaptable to suit very short distance sprint racing - as the overall distance they row over the months increases - so does their individual fitness levels and the idea of doing a very short race is more appealing and achievable.

We are writing and developing handbooks which will allow the teachers to session and lesson plan much more easily and DAS will be an easy way for them and the children to gauge their progress. The Community Sport Coaches will deliver the programme to their linked schools and youth clubs. As the information is received as to which individual, youth club or school have achieved what distances; it will be inputted onto the LYR website in the form of a league.

The league will display the individual standings of the young person, showing just how far they have rowed and what awards they have won. It will also give fun information about what the distance actually means i.e., how many times around a football field that is, how many London buses that would be and how far along the river Thames and how many times they have completed THE BOAT RACE for example.
