We were joined by key note speakers who shared their experiences of their involvement in sport and training
practices.

These included:

Mark Hunter, GB Athlete

At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Mark Hunter won gold in the lightweight men’s doubles with Zac Purchase, Great Britain’s first ever-lightweight medal and Olympic Gold. Hunter was awarded an MBE in the 2009 New Year’s Honour list.

Mark started rowing aged 14 at Poplar Blackwall & District Rowing Club. He attended secondary school at Bower Park Secondary School in Havering.

Simon Dickie, British Rowing (National Governing Body)

Simon, 38 is British Rowing’s Youth and Community Manager.  He has 25 years experience in rowing as an athlete, coach and club volunteer.  He worked as part of the team that introduced Project Oarsome which first placed indoor rowing into state schools and provided links to clubs as far back as 1998.  Today he is still an active rower and regularly races across the UK and abroad.

There were also be case studies from club leaders and young people, which highlighted some of the success and issues of being involved with Indoor Rowing and Row East London in particular.
