London Youth Games

It began in 2006 when LYR was asked to put on an ‘Indoor Rowing’ competition for the London Youth Games…

lyr-girls-in-redIn that first year, indoor rowing was a ‘development sport’ meaning its popularity was going to be assessed for potential full ‘point scoring’ status the next year.  To build support LYR staged 6 – 7 development events in local boroughs and attracted 15 boroughs to compete - giving the event more than enough kudos to merit full blown event status in 2007.

Since that first year, 28 and 26 boroughs out of the total 33 London boroughs have taken part in the indoor rowing event.  And in 2009, the finals of the indoor competition was the finale event for the London Youth Games!

To build on our success we have lobbied to make on water rowing a London Youth Games competition event also.  We ran the Regatta development event in 2008 and with significant support from Thames Water we are proud to report that on water rowing was recognised as a full point scoring event in 2009.
