Elworthy Trophy

On Sunday 2nd October Junior cadets from the Air force, Army & Sea came together to battle for the coveted Elworthy trophy. The cadets from different cadet sections from all over London competed in different events in their teams of 8 to gain points over all the disciplines. Drill, First Aid, Shooting, Assault Course, Raft Building, Map Reading and ROWING!

The teams of 8 competed over 4 minutes to gain as many meters as they could for points. It was really back to nature as the challenges where competed in the field with the indoor rowing machines on a lovely sunny day, with all the camouflage around no one could spot us! However we were very much heard as most teams really worked together as a team to cheer each other on.

Overall the Army cadets won the Elworthy trophy, as it is a sword kept in a locked up glass case, the team only got to grips on it for a couple of seconds… until next year!

Well done to all the cadets that competed!

LYR takes over the Worlds!

They came from all over the capital! LYR brought over 150 young people from all over the capital to Dorney Lake for the World Rowing Junior Championships. The venue is the scene for the Olympic Regatta as part of the 2012 London Olympics and this was the official test event. It went really well too and the venue looked great.

Some had never seen a rowing race before, others were from our performance squad, novice squad or had just completed a week of summer rowing on one of our popular Sumemr Course or Learn2Row Courses. They all had a great day, watching the fantastic racing, competing on indoor rowers and canoe ergs and not forgetting the LYR treasure hunt which drove them to walk the length of the course, chat to stall holders and beg for autographs from athletes. A few lucky ones got to have a go in some EXPLORE Rowing boats on the river. Everyone had a great day, helped by the gorgeous weather.

Roll on 2012. We want to be a part of that too! There are loads more pictures on our facebook page. Go take a look and remember to like us http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150411719429097.443622.81246344096&type=1

It’s that time again

It’s that time again – time for the 2nd One Movement event held this time at Clissold Park in Hackney on Saturday 30th July 2011. This event saw activities such as indoor rowing, judo, cycling and tennis among other activities.

Festival goers heard from urban artists, enjoyed dance performances and sports showcases from East London clubs and organizations including London Youth Rowing. The LYR team was assisted by 7 volunteers from the Lea RC in Hackney who gave buckets of enthusiasm to ensure the event was a greater success than the 1st event.

Each participant was encouraged to row for 2 minutes to see the furthest distance they could achieve. Prizes were then awarded to the furthest distance achieved by the oldest and youngest participants over the age of 11. However, all age groups were encouraged to have a go and a good time was had by all.

Tell us what you think

LYR Summer Rowing Course: Tell us what you think…

We are asking all participants on our summer courses to enter LYR Summer Rowing Competition.

This year, we want to hear how you got on in your week of rowing, whether you are a beginner, more experienced or a volunteer. To enter all you need do is ‘like‘ us on Facebook and then post something about your week on our wall. Not on Facebook? No worries just post your entry to the LYR summer rowing team on info@londonyouthrowing.com

It could be a rap, could be 10 best /worst things about rowing, could be an acrostic poem. In the past we have had videos, stories and photos submitted as well as jokes, limericks and tongue twisters.

The closing date is August 31st so there is plenty of time to enjoy your week of rowing before submitting your entry into LYR Summer Rowing Competition. We have an ipod shuffle to give away to the best entry…

Good luck to all.

Students had responsibility for looking after 60 primary school children & running a rowing Olympics challenge. The young leaders team set aside different tasks for themselves ranging from holding straps for the ergo relay, health & safety, DJ’ing on the sound system for race commentary, and doing promotional material for the event. Well done to those who passed!”
