Lea Rowing Club 

april-07-109Lea Rowing Club is LYR’s affiliated centre in North East London and is located at the Spring Hill boathouse in Upper Clapton, Hackney.

The River Lea is very peaceful stretch of water and is ideally suited to both the task of teaching novices and more advanced athletes.  A towpath runs alongside the river, allowing coaches to follow crews on bikes.

History

People have been rowing here since the early 19th Century.  The Lea Rowing Club was founded in autumn 1980 by the amalgamation of the last five clubs rowing from the boathouse, Stewart Ladies, Crowland, Gladstone Warwick, City Orient and Britannia.  Since its founding the club has won six Henley medals and many National Championship gold medals.  The club has produced international athletes in all categories – men, women, junior and lightweight.

Facilites

The Lea is a fully functional sports club in a beautiful setting with facilities to encourage social interaction and physical fitness, both of which are important aims of the LYR Programme

Junior memebers can take advantage of the recreational and catering facilites available to adults and their own squad room with secure storage.  The Lea also has a Gym offering free weights and resistant weights to help develop and improve our junior rowers.

When it comes down to actually getting on the water, The Lea has a fleet that caters for all ages which consists of:

  • 16 single boats – 9 racing & 6 novice
  • 7 Quads  -  3 Racing & 4 novice
  • 8 Doubles  -  4 Racing & novice
  • 9 Red boats which cater for youth clubs and schools

The fleet has been assembled to cater for all weight catagories at junior level and to encourage rowing from recreational participation to our performance programm

  3. Buses 253/254 from Whitechapel/Aldgate East or Euston Station.  Get off the bus near The Swan public house on Upper Clapton Road and walk down to the end of Spring Hill.
